Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) - InJourney Airports recorded 209 scheduled flight cancellations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, from early Sunday because of disruptions caused by Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruption.
Soekarno-Hatta Assistant Deputy for Communication and Legal Affairs Yudistiawan said the cancellations were recorded between 1:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
The 209 canceled flights comprised 160 domestic flights, 39 international flights and 10 cargo flights, he said.
Airport management will implement operational recovery measures gradually, while considering the evolving volcanic ash situation and aviation safety, Yudistiawan said.
The airport is coordinating with relevant stakeholders to manage operations and passenger services during the disruption, he said.
Soekarno-Hatta has activated Service Recovery Activation measures, including providing food and light refreshments to passengers affected by the cancellations.
The airport has also prepared support facilities, including a command post at Terminal 1B to coordinate and manage ground operations during the temporary closure.
Airport management has coordinated with terminal tenants to maintain commercial services around the clock and meet passengers’ essential needs during the closure.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said Sunday afternoon that closures at six airports affected by Anak Krakatau’s volcanic ash had been extended by another four hours.
The extension was announced during a news conference that began at about 1 p.m. Sunday, potentially keeping the closures in place until about 5 p.m. local time.
The six airports remained closed after the latest paper-test monitoring showed volcanic ash at each facility, Dudy said.
The affected airports are Radin Inten II in Lampung, Soekarno-Hatta in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma in Jakarta, Budiarto and Pondok Cabe in Tangerang, and Husein Sastranegara in Bandung.
The closures were being maintained as a precaution to protect flight safety while authorities continued monitoring volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.
